Golden State Water Company

Placentia water measures 11 grains per gallon

That is very hard — 188 ppm as calcium carbonate, and 1.1× the 10 grain line at which water is officially called hard. Golden State Water Company publishes the figure in its 2025 water quality report.

What size fits

What size softener fits a home in Placentia

Installers all size softeners the same way. Here is what that means for your household — and the math behind it if you want to check our work.

For a 4-person home in Placentia

24,000 grainsoftener

At 11 grains, a household your size uses enough water each week that the softener has to remove about 15,400 grains of minerals before it rinses itself clean. A 24,000 grain unit handles that with room to spare.

Right size at 11 grains

How we worked that out
  1. How much water your household uses200 gal/day4 people × 50 gal
  2. Minerals removed each day2,200 grains200 gal × 11 gpg
  3. What builds up in a week15,400 grains2,200 × 7 days
  4. Unit size24,000 grain

A unit that is too small cannot keep up — scale keeps forming even with a softener installed. This is a starting point, not a specification. Actual sizing depends on your measured tap hardness, iron content, peak flow rate and how the plumbing is laid out — which is what the onsite test establishes.

Where Placentia’s water comes from

Served by an investor-owned utility rather than the city, on a blend of treated Orange County groundwater and imported Metropolitan supply.

At 11 grains per gallon, Placentia sits below the countywide typical figure of 13.9 grains. Scale forms fast, soap works poorly, and appliance life is meaningfully shortened.

What we install in Placentia

Same five systems everywhere in the county. Which one you need depends on what you are trying to fix.

  • Water softener installed in a garage utility areaWater softeners

Removes the calcium and magnesium that scale your pipes, water heater and fixtures.

The whole-home system. It is the only one of these that actually removes hardness, so it is the one that protects the building.

  • Home reverse osmosis purifier beside a kitchen faucetReverse osmosis drinking water

A dedicated drinking and cooking tap, filtered down to the dissolved solids a softener leaves behind.

A softener treats the house; reverse osmosis treats the glass you actually drink from. Most households that install one install both.

  • Filtered-water faucet installed beside a kitchen sinkWhole-home filtration & conditioners

Carbon filtration for taste and odour, and salt-free conditioning where a softener is not an option.

Worth knowing before you buy: a conditioner prevents some scale but does not remove hardness. It cannot do most of what a softener does.

  • Wall-mounted tankless water heater with plumbing connectionsTankless & tank water heaters

Supply and installation, and the softener that keeps a tankless unit from scaling shut.

Hard water and tankless heaters are a bad combination. If you are installing one in Orange County, size the softener at the same time.

  • Woman drinking water while working at a shared office tableCommercial & office

Commercial softeners, commercial reverse osmosis, and bottleless office drinking water.

For restaurants, salons, offices and property managers. Bottleless coolers usually replace a delivery contract outright.

In their own words

  • “I can see why they have so many 5 stars. Got to give credit where credit is due, CCW was amazing. Quick to quote, quick to answer and easy to schedule. They arrived right on the dot and got my water softener system running fast. The guys who came were all honest, professional and friendly. Set up my unit outside and it looked super clean. I shopped around and their pricing was by far the best for the best system (Clack). I already recommended them to my family and now my sister is looking to get a system done by them too. Loving my soft water so far, thanks Tony and team!”

  • “Tony is very professional and knowledgeable. I spent $98 on an inspection from another technician, but they couldn't figure out why my water softener wasn't working. Another company then quoted me nearly $2,500 to replace the circuit board, resin, and other parts. Tony spent about 45 minutes and fixed everything for just a little over $300. Highly recommended!!!!”

  • “We had a wonderful experience with Crystal Clear Water. Tony came out and gave us a quote for a water softener and RO system hookup. The quote was detailed, competitive, and included everything we needed to make sure the softener worked properly. When it came time to do the job, the team showed up on time and asked clarifying questions to make sure it was done the way we wanted it. Once everything was all hooked up, they walked me through what was done and how we needed to care for it. I really appreciated how detailed they were and the fact that I received a text when they were on their way that included a picture and the name of the technician that would be arriving.”

Questions from Placentia homeowners

Is Orange County water hard?

Almost everywhere, yes. Published figures for most cities land between 11 and 20 grains per gallon, against a threshold of 10 grains at which the water districts themselves call water hard. Tustin publishes the hardest figure in the county at 22 grains and Yorba Linda is not far behind at 20. There are two real exceptions worth knowing: Mesa Water District, which supplies Costa Mesa entirely from local groundwater, publishes 6.6 grains, and Seal Beach reports its own groundwater at 3.9. If you are in either of those places, get the tap tested before you buy anything.

Do I still need a water test if you already show my city’s number?

Yes, and it is free. The published figure is a district-wide average across a year. Your actual tap depends on where you sit in the distribution system, which source was blended in that week, and what your own plumbing has accumulated. The number on this site tells you whether to bother; the test tells you what to install.

What size water softener do I need?

Multiply your water hardness in grains per gallon by roughly 50 gallons per person per day, by the number of people in the house, by a seven-day regeneration cycle, then round up to the next standard grain capacity. A four-person household on 14 grain water needs about 19,600 grains removed per week, which is a 24,000 grain unit. The calculator on this site does this for you using your city’s published hardness.

How much does a water softener cost installed?

It is quoted after a site visit, and we will not publish a number we cannot stand behind. Installed cost depends on the grain capacity your household needs, whether there is an existing loop, where the unit has to go, and whether drain and power are already close. The test and the quote are free and there is no obligation at the end of them.

Who actually does the installation?

Crystal Clear Water, CSLB license number 872771, bonded and insured, serving Orange County since 2008. This site finds your water data and sizes the system; they perform the installation, hold the warranty and take the service calls. You can verify the license with the California Contractors State License Board.
