Read this before you buy a conditioner
Salt-free conditioners are widely sold as "salt-free softeners". They are not softeners. A conditioner does not remove calcium and magnesium from the water — it changes the form the minerals take so they are less inclined to bond to surfaces as hard scale.
That is a real effect and worth having in some situations. But water leaving a conditioner is still hard water, with all the consequences that follow: soap still will not lather properly, glassware still spots, laundry still comes out stiff. If somebody quotes you a conditioner as a substitute for a softener, this is the distinction they are skipping over.
What a conditioner does do
- Reduces new scale forming inside pipes and on heating elements
- Makes the scale that does form easier to wipe away
- Uses no salt and needs no drain connection or regeneration cycle
- Works where a drain, power supply or space for a brine tank is not available
What it does not do
- Remove hardness — the water is still measurably as hard as it was
- Stop hard-water spotting on glassware, dishes or shower doors
- Soften laundry or cut how much soap and detergent you use
- Reduce soap residue on skin and hair
Carbon filtration, and the combined system
Whole-home carbon filtration is a different job again: it addresses taste and odour at every tap in the house, including the shower. It does nothing about hardness, and it is not a competitor to a softener.
The configuration most Orange County homes end up with is a combined carbon-plus-softener system: carbon for what the water tastes and smells like, softening for what it does to the building, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking. A site visit establishes which parts of that you actually need.
Questions people ask about this
What is the difference between a water softener and a water conditioner?
A softener removes calcium and magnesium using ion exchange, so the water leaving it is genuinely soft. A salt-free conditioner does not remove anything; it alters how the minerals behave so they are less likely to stick as scale. A conditioner can reduce scale, but it will not stop hard-water spotting on glassware, will not soften laundry, and will not reduce soap use. If somebody sells you a conditioner as a softener, that is the difference they are glossing over.
Does a softener make the water safe to drink?
A softener is not a drinking water filter. It exchanges hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium and does nothing about taste, odour or dissolved solids. If drinking water quality is what you care about, the answer is a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink. Most households that install a softener install reverse osmosis alongside it.
Is Orange County water hard?
Almost everywhere, yes. Published figures for most cities land between 11 and 20 grains per gallon, against a threshold of 10 grains at which the water districts themselves call water hard. Tustin publishes the hardest figure in the county at 22 grains and Yorba Linda is not far behind at 20. There are two real exceptions worth knowing: Mesa Water District, which supplies Costa Mesa entirely from local groundwater, publishes 6.6 grains, and Seal Beach reports its own groundwater at 3.9. If you are in either of those places, get the tap tested before you buy anything.
